Roll Call: The 2014 Starving Artists

We had a great response to our Call for Artists this year. Thanks to each and every artist who applied. The Starving Artist Committee was thoroughly impressed with the originality, dedication, aspirations and talents of the applicants.

The decision was tough but we are extremely excited to present to you the official list of astonishing Featured Artists and Spotlighted Artists.

For some, this will be their first show in Rome, Georgia, and for some, this is their third time participating in the Starving Artist Expo. We certainly have a beautiful variety of work to showcase from these artists so clear your calendar for Saturday, March 29th!

Let's Make Something Happen

This event started with a mission. It is a mission to feed. Feed the passionate. Feed the hungry. Feed the homeless, the forgotten and the lost.

We are called the Starving Artists. But let me say that no one that has participated in the show in the past has missed a meal lately. Our name jokingly refers to the stereotypical artist that is so broke they eat Ramen noodles, sleep on a mattress on the floor and ride the bus because they have no car. But, in America, if you are lucky enough to purchase art supplies, you are typically well fed and well dressed.

The Starving Starving Artists.

But that is not true for everyone.

So, while the first part of our mission is to connect the artist to the marketplace, the second part of our goal is to feed the hungry.

Local and abroad.

Locally, we have collected canned goods at our event and donated these to Impact Church to feed the homeless and to the Restoration Center that helps people transition back into the world after being released from prison. Both of these groups of people often have the fewest resources to work with to survive or make a place for themselves in the world. The food is collected from those who attend our show and put in the hands of those who need and appreciate it most right here in Rome, Ga.

To extend aid abroad, we support an organization called Next Generation Nepal.  This non-profit

group was founded to rescue trafficked children in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Some of these children are orphans and some have been separated from their parents through a veiled kidnapping scheme. NGN runs multiple orphanages in Nepal for children rescued from illegal orphanages and other terrible living situations where children are fed very little, hidden in small dark rooms, made to pan handle in the streets and given little or no medical attention. Many suffer from malnutrition. Some do not survive. NGN also works to reconnect and return kidnapped children to their parents. The Starving Artist Expo has supported this organization since 2013 through donations from our patrons. Proceeds from the 2014 event will continue to support this organization through sales of the book Little Princes and proceeds from sales of Spotlighted Artist's work.

All this is to say that this event is more than an art show. It's about making things happen. Making someone's dream to be an artist come true. Helping someone who has been released from prison get back on their feet and make a new start. And helping little tiny feet find their way home to their parents all the way over in Nepal.

So save the date, grab some canned goods each time you go to the grocery store and order Little Princes off amazon.

And you can make some great things happen by coming to an Art Show.

• Lon Eldridge will be entertaining from 3-5 with his jazzy blues sound. More musicians to be announced soon
• The Rome Area Council for the Arts has joined us as an Event Sponsor
• Proceeds from the event will go towards Next Generation Nepal to provide food, housing and family reconnection services to trafficked children. The article lists it as Namaste Children Nepal, which is a nice name too, but in case you wanted to learn more we wanted to provide the actual name of the organization.
• We will be accepting canned goods at the event to help the hungry in our local community

Call for Artists

We are seeking artists to participate in the 3rd Annual 2014 Starving Artist Expo in Rome, GA. The event will be held March 29 from 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. at the Seven Hills Building at 538 Broad Street, Rome, GA.

There are two categories in which artists can apply.

Featured Artist

Featured artists are the main event at the Starving Artist Expo. Each featured artist will receive a space approximately 8 ft wide. Artists will show inside and outside of the beautiful Seven Hills Building and be prominently featured in event promotional material. Featured artists bring their own display items and handle their transactions. And, if you want to demonstrate your art- we would love that! So long as it isn't disruptive or messy. Just let us know the 411. Check out the application for full details.

Spotlighted Artist

The spotlighted artist category is new to the Starving Artist Expo this year and allows artists to make a splash without having to get in over your head. To show in the Spotlighted Artist category, there is no pressure to provide display or create an entire body of work. We simply want to show off your skills! Artists can apply to show 1-3 items on consignment at the show for a small application fee. Attendance is not required for the event’s duration as sales will be handled by the show volunteers. Though, we hope you will bring all your friends and impress them that your art is featured in a show!

The Small Print
To be considered for the Starving Artist Expo, you must be the creator of your work, taking a material and making it something completely new and/or different. Preference will be for artists new in their career, and/or new in making their art a career, though professional artists will be considered.

The application deadline for both categories is February 14, 2014. All the details are on the application so please read it thoroughly.  Please email starvingartistexpo@gmail.com for additional information.

Who We Are

We are dreamers. We are learners. We are artists.

In 2012 a small group of artists came together to put on an art show in Rome, Georgia. The show's focus was on talented artist new on the scene that in one way or another, are working to make their living in part, by their art.

We don't all claim to be professionals, though some of us are. We don't all have dozens of art show experiences on our resumes, though some of us do. We simply create and the Starving Artist Expo brings those works to public display.

And despite our name, we are not starving, yet there are many people in our own community and around the world that are. Through our even we also raise money for trafficked children in Nepal and collect canned goods for those in need in Northwest Georgia.
